Rail Line Investigation

South East South Australia Rail Study

Feasibility for standard gauge rail connection of rail between Mt Gambier and Portland and Adelaide Melbourne interstate rail line.

The Problem

The lower South East of South Australia has not been serviced by rail for many years and the 130km section of rail between Mt Gambier and Heywood on the Portland standard gauge rail line has been abandoned.

The Solution

Evaluated the feasibility of reinstating and upgrading the rail line with linkages to the interstate rail network and export ports with major exporters and importers and domestic producers in the region.

The Benefits

Quantified the volumes, costs and investments, conditions and commitments that would be required to develop an intermodal terminal near Mt Gambier and reinstate the rail line to Heywood that could result in 25% reduction in per tonne freight costs for importers, exporters and local producers.
