Intermodal throughput for least investment
The Problem
To maximise the intermodal terminal profitability with the least capital required.
The Solution
To identify the drivers of profitability and optimize the capital (infrastructure – rail and hardstand, and equipment – wagons, reach stackers and lifting equipment
Identified throughput constraints of existing operations in loading, unloading and the mismatches between the rail paths and terminal scheduling to improve throughput (TEU per hour)
Recommended the use of reach stackers in the terminal between users be reorganised to improve availability and reliability in unloading and loading trains
Recommended amendments to train paths to evenly spread train unloading and loading capacities
Realigned schedules and changed container workflows
Identified the transition path from reach stackers to gantries and terminal and rail expansions
The Benefits
Defined optimal scheduling and capital and equipment staging to maximise terminal throughput.
‘Scott helped Balco secure funding for our Intermodal expansion and has helped us develop the rail and intermodal supply chain business. SCM has also helped develop Balco’s Group strategy and management teams across our Hay, Grain and Intermodal businesses to improve our profitability and service capabilities.’
